Seehexe, 50 sqm

“Seehexe” is a wooden bermudan sloop  50 sq.m. yacht, built to the Seefahrtkreuzer rule.

“Seehexe” (also “See Hexe”) , and others like her, are generally known as ‘Windfall Yachts’ following their acquisition by the Royal Navy at the end of WWII for use by British Armed Forces.  Allocated to the Royal Navy, she spent most of her time in Gosport attached to HMS Daedalus, after first being allocated to the Naval Air Command.

She was designed and built in Kiel, probably for the Luftwaffe, in 1936 by B. Wilke, and is sail no V48.

We’ve been told she was the fast one but all we know about her racing record is this:

 – Won the RORC Channel race, earning a mention in Adlard Coles’  well-known book,  ‘Heavy Weather Sailing’ (still available from Adlard Coles Nautical).

 – DNF in the Fastnet Race of 1957.

Peter Wilson rescued her from Cardiff when her then owners needed to move her due to the Cardiff Bay development.
